Disappearing 9 patch, and a finish

Hello Everyone,

It's crazy how fast this year is going. The older I get, the faster it seems to go.

I've been working a lot with my scraps this year. It feels good to get them used up.

Yesterday I pulled out my 2 1/2" squares to play with. Sorting them by color, dark and light.

I am making a disappearing 9 patch. You take a simple 9 patch. And cut it in the middle on both sides.

Then you have 4 blocks that look like this. That you can switch around..

Turning this way and that...

Until you have a design you like...

You can mix and match them too...

I still have a lot of 9 patches to make, so am not sure how I am going to make the final layout. Stay tuned :)

Here is another finish I did in Sept. This one was finished right at the end of the month. I'm calling it mosaic tiles.

I was fascinated by this triangle, made by using a square and 2 triangles.

You put four of them together and you get this block.

I'm sure this has a name, but I don't know what it is. I just that it was a fun block to make. Now that the quilt is finished, I wished I would of made it bigger. This one is 44 x 50. I think the two borders really set it off. I'm sure a little girl somewhere will love it, it's going in my donate pile.

It's a good thing I have lots of scraps to play with, as there are lots of great scrappy quilts to make!

Cornerstones is finished!!

Hope all is well with you and yours.

My Cornerstones quilt is complete! The blocks have my favorite fabric line in them, Sunkissed by Sweetwater. Also some Kona Bay fabrics. I can't remember the name of the colorful fabrics, I think it is Boundless by Crafty, but I could be wrong.

 I started this in the last half of 2015, so it's about time it was quilted and bound. LOL

You can see the quilting a bit in the picture below. Elongated orange peel in the borders and big flowers in the blocks, with swirly centers.

Here is the back, just a plain black flannel. I have never used black like this in a quilt before. But those jewel like colors needed something to set them off, and black was it.

Sorry for the poor coloring in these photo's, they don't really show off the beautiful colors very well. But it's very, very smoky right now, due mostly to the awful Redding fire. And  a few other fires contributing to the smoky air is well.

Hunters star and Cornerstones

Hello Everyone,

 I've been busy in the sewing room this past week, it sure does feel good. I get some housework done, then head to the sewing room while the boys are outside.

 So I have finished the Hunters star quilt top. It measures at 48x48. I REALLLY wish that I had more of the fabric so that I could of made it larger, because I just LOVE it!

I added some of my very favorite line in the border, Sunkissed by Sweetwater (the orange swirly) and the gray butterfiles in another favorite, Kona Bay. I am still considering adding another border to it... I have to let it congentate ;)

So while that is brewing in the back of my head, I decided to get my Cornerstones quilt quilted up. A simple 9 patch made of flying geese and disappearing 9 patches that I came up with. I love playing with EQ and making different patterns.

The backing is a soft, black flannel I bought from Thousands of  bolts. It's wide backing, love buying from them!

 I've been trying to figure out how I wanted to quilt this quilt for quite a long time now. I started making it in the later half of 2015. This quilt is going on our bed, it will keep my sweetie warm for sure :)

A new year already.. and the first month is gone..

Well hello All,

It's been awhile. I am really hoping to get back into the swing of things this year. I've missed blogging and I still have a huge pile of quilt tops that need quilting, maybe this will be the year :)

I did finish my dd's quilt in Dec.

 I just did some simple, straight line quilting on it.

All of my Cornerstone blocks (made with disappearing 9 patches and flying geese) are done, I need to order some sashing fabric for it, before I can get it all pieced together.

All the ones above are vice/verse blocks, two of each.

And these 5 are just single ones, as I needed a few more to make my design.

Lately I've been working on  Pat and my '+' blocks that we exchanged in 2013. I have the blocks sewn together, now I will be adding a 2" solid border, then a scrappy border...maybe a piano key border? we'll see.

a VERY busy quilt top... but I will enjoy looking at all the pretty fabrics in it :)... which needs to be ironed, of course ;)

I think I am going to be doing this BOM/blog hop this year. I am not much of an appliquer, so I probably will only do the pieced blocks, but it looks like fun :)

I've never done a BOM before, so we'll see how it goes. I'm hoping it will help me get my sewing mojo back.

Here on the Ridge, we've been getting a lot of rain. We really need it, so it's a good thing. It's too warm this time of year here in upper California to get snow, unless you are up above 4 or 5,000 ft.... except for occassionaly we'll get a little bit, just enough to look pretty then it melts.

WIP Wednesday, making progress

Hello Everyone,

California is getting some rain, I hope the fires are getting rained on. They really need to be put out.

I'm finally making some progress on my quilt. I even found a name for it :) Cornerstones.

I'm chain piecing 2 geese blocks together.

I need 4 of these units per block.

And here is the finished block. You can see why I am calling it Cornerstones.

It feels good to have all that trimming done, so now I can get to the fun part of putting them all together.

WIP Wednesday, on Thursday..

I've made a bit of progress on my disappearing 9patch project this week.

Here's most of my 9 patches, all trimmed and cut in half both horizontal and vertical (as that's what makes them 'disappear' if you didn't know). I love the swirly yellow (Sunkissed by Sweetwater) paired with the almost-solids.

And here are half of my flying geese... sigh~ only half, as I calculated wrong when first cutting them out. I love the gray check (Sunkissed by Sweetwater) mixed with the almost-solids, too.

When I was first cutting this project out, I calculated 4 geese per block. But I am supposed to use 8 geese per block!! And then, I decided I needed this quilt a bit bigger, so have to make 5 more blocks, which means another 20 geese on top of the 80 more I have to do. BLAH!

Buuuuttt, as much as I hate the trimming, don't these blocks all look fantastic! Trimmed and squared up just right :) and that makes the piecing together go much easier too, of course. So it's well worth it.... maybe by next week I can actually start putting the blocks together ;)

A new project

Hello All,

I hope my American friends had a great Fourth of July weekend. The heat wave we've been having has finally cooled some, we might even see a shower or two in the next few days. That would be good.

So, I started a new quilt top. I know, I need another quilt top like I need a hole in my head. But, well... you know ;) My son is making me a nice sewing table, and I am hoping to be able to use it to help me baste my quilt tops, so that I can really and truly start quilting them easier.

I designed this quilt quite a few months ago. My dh helped me pick out colors :) Then I bought this fat quarter bundle from Riley Blake, it's called Cotton Shades. And the colors are close enough to what my dh and I came up with, that I decided to use them for this project.

I didn't use the whole bundle, there are 4 pieces left over. These are all the ones, plus the backgrounds pieces, I am using.

The darker gray is Quilters Rose by STOF. Oh, thats the wrong yellow. I switched it out for some Sweetwater swirly yellow fabric from the Sunkissed line. The gray check is from the same line. You can see the swirly yellow I am using in the next picture.

Here's the disappearing nine patch block I'll be using.

And some flying geese.

I'll be doing a lot of trimming... sigh~ but, trimming makes the blocks go together better, right?! So trimming I'll be doing... after the blocks are sewn.
